Man sentenced to prison for copyright infringement and tax evasion, his cryptocurrency confiscated

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday that Talon White, of Newport, Oregon, “has been sentenced to federal prison for creating illegal video streams and downloading web sites.”

The DOJ went on to say that the 31-year-old created the websites to “illegally distribute thousands of copyrighted films and TV shows and evade taxes on the profits of his illegal ventures.”

The case began when investigators learned in October 2013 information about numerous illegal websites linked to White that allowed paying subscribers to stream and download copyrighted content. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) then asked White in 2014 to cease his illegal activities, but he ignored the request.

White then migrated his operations from one website to another over the next four years to avoid detection, the Justice Department noted, adding that by 2018 he had amassed millions of dollars in subscription fees from his websites.

The DOJ stated that in November 2018, investigators issued search and seizure warrants for his Newport home and several bank accounts:

Agents seized $ 3.9 million from his accounts, $ 35,000 in cash and more than $ 1 million in cryptocurrency.

In addition, the Justice Department found that White “filed false personal income tax returns, failed to report his income by more than $ 4.4 million and caused tax losses of more than $ 1.7 million to the IRS.”

White was sentenced to “12 months and one day in federal prison and three years of supervised release,” the announcement said. He was charged with copyright infringement and tax evasion on November 1, 2019; he pleaded guilty to both charges on November 25, 2019.

The DOJ in more detail:

District Court Judge Ann L. Aiken sentenced White to refund more than $ 4.3 million to the MPAA and the IRS. White is also facing forfeit all U.S. currencies and cryptocurrencies seized from his bank accounts, in addition to his Newport home that was bought with the proceeds of his plan.
