Twitter permanently suspends Splinterlands account for unspecified violations – Bitcoin News

After Splinterlands, a blockchain-based NFT trading card game, was tweeted through its account since 2018, the service was permanently banned as the social media giant Twitter refused to respond to appeals.

While the non-fungible token (NFT) hype may have cooled, there is no shortage of controversy surrounding the space. The latest incident affects none other than the social media portal Twitter.

Although Jack Dorsey warmly welcomed the NFT movement after auctioning his very first tweet in NFT form, the platform’s recent decision to suspend blockchain-based game operator Splinterlands has embroiled the social media platform in a new censorship debate.

Splinterlands, which gives players the ability to collect, trade, and battle rare NFT collectibles, was among the first to take advantage of the unique properties of non-fungible tokens as part of their platform experience. The company’s Twitter account was banned from the platform on June 23 for no apparent reason. This happened without warning or explanation.

There is speculation that Splinterlands may have been banned for violating certain Twitter policies on the sale of “illegal or certain regulated goods or services”. The policy states: “You must not use our service for any unlawful purpose or to promote illegal activity. This includes selling, buying, or facilitating transactions in illegal goods or services, as well as certain types of regulated goods or services. “

Since the company does not sell financial products, is a gaming platform, and does not have secondary markets for its collectibles that are monitored by the community, the violation is unclear. However, without the platform’s prior warning of the violations, it is difficult to determine if they were the cause, especially given the multitude of other accounts that use similar practices.

Splinterlands has already filed several appeals to lift the suspension, including a cryptic message from Twitter on June 30 stating the suspension was permanent and further appeals would be ignored.

The not-so-elegant timing of the Twitter lock

Although completely speculative, Chris Roberts, Content Director of Splinterlands, pointed out the difficult timing in a post published on Peakd. The company’s account suspension was in line with a decision by Twitter that the same day revealed its NFTs for sale to its 60 million followers, making the suspension either a little suspicious or numb.

There are also curiosities as to whether Twitter is using its status to crush other NFT players by launching its product “a la” Amazon to eliminate any dangerous competition. Others, like Splinterlands’ Chris Roberts, believe it could be some form of censorship and reiterate the need for more censorship-resistant platforms like Hive Blockchain and Peakd.

Also, given that Splinterlands operates on Hive and tweeted the news about the blockchain’s latest token pairings that same morning, there are concerns that the censorship-resistant properties that Hive blockchain supports could be attacked by social media giants . As with other platforms whose hosting and other services have been canceled by tech giants, this could be a similar tactic, especially given Twitter’s history of forcibly evicting accounts without notice.

However, in the absence of more specific evidence, this link remains unfounded at best. Although no new developments have occurred since the suspension notification on the 30th and without clarification by Twitter, the motives for the social giant’s move and its justification are still being questioned.
