Get paid in digital currency to use a toilet
There is now a toilet that you paid to use in digital currency. It was designed by a South Korean environmental technology professor at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and is already in use, Reuters reported on Friday. The institute is one of four public universities in South Korea dedicated to scientific and technological research.
The toilet is called Beevi, a combination of the words bee and vision. It is connected to a laboratory that produces biogas and liquid manure from excrement.
During operation, a vacuum pump pumps feces into an underground tank, which reduces water consumption and the feces are broken down into methane by microorganisms. This becomes an energy source that supplies “a gas stove, a hot water boiler and a solid oxide fuel cell” with electricity in a building at the university, according to the publication.
Professor Cho Jae-weon, who designed the toilet, was quoted as saying:
If we think outside the box, faeces is valuable for generating energy and manure. I brought this value into the ecological cycle.
He explained that an average person dumps about 500 grams per day, which can be converted into 50 liters of methane gas. He found that this gas can produce 0.5 kWh of electricity or be used to drive a car about 0.75 miles.
Beevi toilet users are paid in a digital currency called Ggool, which means honey in Korean. Currently, every person who uses the toilet earns 10 Ggool per day.
The digital coins can then be used to buy anything from a store on campus, such as: B. freshly brewed coffee, instant cup noodles, fruit and books. Students scan a QR code to pay with the digital currency.
Heo Hui-jin, a graduate student at the university, was quoted as saying:
I always thought that poop was dirty, but now it’s a treasure of great value to me. I even talk about poop during meals to think about buying a book I want.
News of this toilet has garnered some social media attention, some calling it an “ingenious” creation. However, many in the crypto community made fun of the concept and literally called the digital currency “the king of shit coins”.
