NGO Announces Plan to Use NFTs for Famine Victims of Tigray War in Ethiopia – Altcoins Bitcoin News

A non-governmental organization (NGO), Save Tigray, has announced that it will use the proceeds from the sale of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to support its goal of averting a famine in Ethiopia’s war-torn region of Tigray. According to Save Tigray, the NFTs “based on interpreted photos of the tragedy” will be sold on the charity’s NFT marketplace.

Create NFTs based on photos of tragedy

According to a statement released on July 13, 2021, the proceeds from NFT sales will be donated to organizations including the World Food Program, the International Rescue Committee, UNICEF and Save the Children.

Also in the statement, Mirna Saraswati from Save Tigray explains how the NGO came up with the idea of raising funds through the sale of NFTs. Sarasvati stated:

Last year we planned to create NFTs from fair trade art created by women from Tigray. But the outbreak of war in November put an end to these plans. Instead, we create NFTs based on interpreted photos of the tragedy. We will sell them on our NFT marketplace and donate the proceeds equally to four groups.

In early November 2020, an armed conflict broke out in which Ethiopian government troops fought against Tigray rebels. Since then, the conflict, which has also drawn forces from neighboring Eritrea, has left up to 1.8 million people on the brink of famine. According to UNICEF, this conflict is said to have already cost tens of thousands of lives.

Energy efficient NFTs

Meanwhile, Save Tigray organizers hope to “use the Tigray project as a prototype so that they can later create similar projects to tackle climate change, racial injustice, disease and other problems”. Regarding the supposedly inefficient power of blockchain-anchored digital assets, Savannah Partridge, COO of Save Tigray said:

“We solved the biggest problem associated with it, energy consumption. Our platform uses 10 million times less energy than the standard Etherium-based ones.

Still, as with any NFT, the provenance of each work can be easily traced through the blockchain, Partridge explained. This means, therefore, that “buyers can continue to use any image to raise more for the cause if they so choose.” Additionally, the NFTs earn royalties every time they are sold so “they can raise funds forever”.

Saving Tigray’s greater goal

Partridge says that in addition to using NFTs to highlight the desperate situation in Tigray, the NGO is also planning an advertising campaign to raise public awareness of the famine and quasi-genocide in Tigray. Partridge said:

“As much as we want to raise money for the victims, we really want to get the message across to millions. The Ethiopian government has announced that aid flights can resume from the capital, but none have been approved so far. An outcry from the public can force them to act. “
