Demolished over a thousand bitcoin mining machines in Malaysia

The Malaysian authorities completely destroyed 1,069 Bitcoin mining machines, which were seized between February and April, with a steamroller, local media reported on Friday.

The mining machines were confiscated in a joint action by the police and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) in Miri, a Malaysian city on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo. Their value is estimated at 5.3 million Malaysian ringgits ($ 1.26 million). All court-settled seizures were disposed of at Miri District Police Headquarters on Friday.

Miri Police Chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said eight people were also arrested for engaging in illegal mining activities. He said in a statement:

A total of six people were successfully charged with electricity theft under Section 379 of the Criminal Code, fined up to RM8,000 and imprisoned for up to eight months.

Authorities said the mining machines used electricity from SEB’s power lines to mine bitcoin.

According to the police chief, SEB suffered a loss of 8.4 million Malaysian ringgits due to electricity theft from Bitcoin mining activities. He continued:

Electricity theft for Bitcoin mining activities has often resulted in blackouts, and in 2021 three houses were razed to the ground due to illegal power connections.

Local news agency Dayakdaily published a video on Friday about the destruction of seized Bitcoin mining machines.
