The Israeli parliament, the Knesset, became the first national legislature to publish a non-fungible token. The special NFT was created for the country’s new President Isaac Herzog, who took office this week after his election in early June.

Isaac Herzog received the token shortly before his inauguration on Wednesday, reported the Jerusalem Post. The unique NFT is a copy of the original oath signed by his late father, the sixth President of Israel, Chaim Herzog.
With the symbolic gesture, the Knesset will probably be the first parliament to set up an NFT. “I am delighted to present President Herzog with a special keepsake from his father, which includes the oath he signed 38 years ago,” Knesset spokesman Mickey Levy was quoted as saying. Levy also emphasized:
It is a great honor for the Knesset to use one of the most innovative technologies in the world to preserve such an important historical document for future generations.
In the original file, published for the first time, President Herzog senior promised “to be loyal to the State of Israel and its laws and to fulfill my duties as President”. His son Isaac did the same on July 7th from the lectern in the Knesset plenary.
The image file for the NFT was created by staff in the Knesset’s technology and computer department using a secure and encrypted mobile device, the newspaper added. It is given to the employees of the IT department of the Presidential House.
The idea came up about a week ago when Chaim Herzog’s oath of office was found in the Knesset archives. Parliamentary officials were moved by the historic document and proposed that a copy be given to the new president before his inauguration.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have become a sensation in the art world in recent months. The Israeli parliament only spent hundreds of shekels to create the file, but the global success of NFTs could increase their value to millions of dollars, the publication muses. For example, artist Mike Winkelmann recently sold an NFT for $ 69.3 million, the third highest price tag for a work by a living artist.
In Israel, the president has a largely ceremonial role and limited powers. The main task of the president is to discuss the nominations for the office of prime minister with the leaders of the parties represented in parliament and to give a mandate to form a government. Isaac Herzog was elected by the members of the Knesset on June 2 for a single term of seven years.
