FinCEN appoints former DOJ Digital Currency Counsel as new Chief Digital Currency Advisor
FinCEN, the U.S. regulator that fights domestic and international financial crime, announced that the organization has hired the first Chief Digital Currency Advisor (DCA). Michele Korver will be FinCEN’s first DCA after serving 20 years for the Department of Justice (DOJ) and as a former federal prosecutor.
Korver will act as DCA for the director of FinCEN and she wants to “advance FinCEN’s leadership role in the digital currency area by working with internal and external partners”. FinCEN stands ready to double the illegal use of cryptocurrencies as the financial watchdog spoke in a priority report on the “abuse of virtual assets that exploit”.
“Michele brings a wealth of expertise in digital currencies and will be a tremendous pioneer in coordinated efforts to maximize FinCEN’s contribution to innovative potential for financial expansion while minimizing the risk of illicit finance,” Mosier said Tuesday .
While at the DOJ, Korver served as the Digital Currency Counsel for the Department’s crime department. She has advised federal employees on matters involving crypto assets in cases involving “indictment decisions and other prosecutorial strategies”. On digital monetary policy, Korver has also worked with the Treasury Department’s Financial Stability Oversight Council and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
Michael Mosier was recently named Deputy Director and New Deputy Director on April 2, 2021, and he too has a background in cryptocurrencies. When FinCEN named Mosier as its current director, the regulator’s Office of Strategic Communications found that Mosier was working with Chainalysis.
Commenting on the hiring of Korver and a new FinCEN director for strategic communications, Mosier commented, “These are incredible people for an incredible moment for FinCEN and the space of financial integrity that is a priority.”
