A new full-length film starring Anthony Hopkins will premiere on Wednesday on a new non-fungible token (NFT) platform, Vuele, according to an announcement by several companies involved.
The film called “Zero Contact” stars Hopkins, Veronica Ferres, Aleks Paunovic, Lilly Krug, TJ Kayama and Martin Sternmark. Hopkins has won six Academy Awards, most recently this year as Best Actor in his role in The Father.
Zero Contact follows “five characters around the world who are only connected by their devotion to tech titan Finley Hart (Hopkins),” the announcement details. “They are forced to work together to eliminate Hart’s secret invention, a machine that is either the solution to human problems or the end of life on earth.”
The film was produced entirely virtually during the global pandemic of 2020. “Everything about this movie is unconventional from the way we shot it with zoom and remote production to the way it was distributed,” commented Rick Dugdale, the producer and director, adding:
This project was really a once in a lifetime experience. We had to innovate every step of the way and shoot in 17 countries around the world. It only makes sense for a movie like this to keep breaking new ground by being released on the blockchain. It’s a unique opportunity to be part of history.
The NFT platform Vuele, founded last month, is a joint venture between the fintech company Currencyworks and the producer Enderby Entertainment. It is operated through a new subsidiary, Enderbyworks LLC.
Vuele describes itself as “the leading direct-to-consumer, feature film viewing and distribution platform that delivers feature films and collective digital entertainment content as NFTs”.
The platform “enables users to purchase exclusive limited edition films and collector’s content to view, collect, sell and trade on the platform”. Customers can pay with cryptocurrency or normal credit cards.
Dugdale stated:
Vuele will have four or five “drops” of Zero Contact, with the first likely being in late July-early August. They contain the film as well as extras to be determined, which would vary from token to token in order to create different price points.
“The idea is to develop a marketplace for the NFTs,” he noted, adding that this distribution method “creates a shortage of copies of the film and protects against piracy”.
