Ross Ulbricht speaks about Bitcoin in his first interview from prison
Ross Ulbricht’s voice was heard by those attending the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami this year. The most recent interview was recorded by Bitcoin Magazine and is the first recorded phone conversation with Ulbricht after his arrest. Addressing the loss of his freedom, Ulbricht noted that while in prison he “has spent the past eight years watching Bitcoin grow up from here”.
During the phone call, Ulbricht found that he was around in the early days of the Bitcoin network and there weren’t many altcoins and forks around at that time. Ulbricht said, besides that he viewed the crypto ecosystem as one big “family”. Through his lens in prison, Ulbricht stated that he had seen the cryptocurrency space generate a lot of innovation since leaving. Ulbricht stated:
I’ve seen incredible innovations. I’ve seen inspiring courage. We didn’t know at first how things would play out for Bitcoin, but over the years I’ve always been impressed with what you’ve achieved – we’re changing the world economy. We have brought a touch of freedom and equality to remote corners of the world. I know we can change the criminal justice system too.
Ulbricht: “Bitcoin is strong. Bitcoin is powerful. Our work is not over ‘
The case of Ross Ulbricht has been labeled a “miscarriage of justice” and Ulbricht has been supported by more than 250 organizations, eminent figures and world leaders. The creator of the Silk Road Marketplace has one of the largest Change.org petitions in the US, as the petition has been signed by 433,845 people to date. The petition seeks mercy from Ulbricht as his crimes have been non-violent and his “investigations, trials and convictions have been full of abuse.” Speaking about the Silk Road during his phone call with Bitcoin Magazine, Ulbricht said:
I thought with Bitcoin I could try to do something that actually made a difference – I was impatient at the time. With my first idea, the Silk Road, I hurried ahead. This is a 26 year old who thinks he has to save the world before someone outdoes him. Little did I know Silk Road would work, but now we all know it caught on. It was used to sell drugs and now I’m in jail.
Ulbricht also said it was ironic that he created the Silk Road because he wanted “freedom, privacy, [and] Equal rights. ”But what happened was that he ended up“ in a place where these things don’t exist. ”He now sees a lot of potential in Bitcoin and crypto participants in general because he believes“ Bitcoin is strong ”.
“Bitcoin is powerful. We are powerful. And our work is not finished yet, ”emphasized Ulbricht.
