Ledger customers are sent counterfeit wallets to steal their private seeds – Bitcoin News

Ledger customers receive fake wallets in the mail to steal their cryptocurrency. A user on Reddit reported that he had received a suspicious package that was supposedly sent by Ledger. The package contained a letter stating that the user must replace the current wallet for security reasons. Ledger has been the source of several customer data leaks. Presumably criminals use this information to organize these plans.

Fraudsters send fake wallets to Ledger customers

According to reports, scammers are sending fake hardware wallets to Ledger customers in order to steal their private seeds. According to a Reddit user, Ledger sent him a package containing a real-looking Ledger Nano X. The package also contained a letter stating that his current wallet had been compromised. This letter emphasized that the user had to replace their current wallet with the new one. It stated:

For security reasons, we have sent you a new device that you have to switch to a new device for security. Inside your new box is a guide that you can read to learn how to set up your new device.

The package reportedly included instructions on how to set up the new cryptocurrency wallet with the private key. On closer inspection, however, the hardware wallet that was sent was a modified version of the original Nano X. Also, this modified wallet contained a number of different connections inside the device.

Mike Grover, a security advisor, spoke to Bleepingcomputer about the counterfeit wallet. Grover stated:

This appears to be a simple flash drive strapped to the ledger to enable some sort of malware delivery.

The Ledger website has updated its phishing campaign page to alert users to this new modus operandi.

Customers facing huge data leaks

The company suffered two major data leaks in the past year. The first happened on July 14th when an unidentified third party accessed a million email messages and 9,500 addresses of its users. In addition, the information was leaked free of charge on the Internet last December 20th. As a result, its customers are exposed to a number of phishing and email scams.

James A. Chambers’ blog documents these attacks. The article entitled “Life as a Ledger Wallet Data Breach Victim” remotely recounts all of the problems these leaks created for him. The company is even facing a class action lawsuit filed on April 6 by a portion of its users. However, this is one of the first attacks to physically target users by sending modified products.
