Before his arrest, John McAfee reportedly hid in a Spanish “ghost hotel” with a Bitcoin mining farm in the basement. Clues from pictures and messages posted by the antivirus tycoon on social media point to a half-abandoned hotel owned by a Russian.
“Ghost hotel” with Bitcoin mining farm
After John McAfee was reportedly found dead in his prison cell in Spain, reports have surfaced that the antivirus tycoon’s hiding place was a secret bitcoin mining farm.
The place was a semi-abandoned hotel in Cambrils called the Daurada Park Hotel, the El Pais publication reported on Friday. Cambrils is a coastal city in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain.
The hotel is referred to as a “ghost hotel” by the Spanish publication El Confidencial, as reservations were next to impossible because no one answered the phone, even when the hotel was still operating. The publication tried to contact the hotel about the McAfee story back in 2018, but to no avail. There are few reviews of the hotel on Tripadvisor and none after 2017. Most reviewers found the hotel “awful”.
The Daurada Park Hotel was bought by an unknown Russian businessman, Diari de Tarragona previously reported. Authorities became suspicious of the hotel when a giant laser was built on the roof that pointed at the sky. Catalan police raided the site in 2018 and found a Bitcoin mining farm in the hotel’s basement that was operating around the clock. At the time, police reportedly lacked the authority to shut down Bitcoin mining operations because cryptocurrency was an unregulated industry. The publication indicated that it was unclear what happened to the mining farm. The hotel is now permanently closed.
McAfee recently said the Feds suspected he had some hidden cryptocurrencies, which he denied, adding that all of his assets had been seized by the Feds.
Track McAfee’s location to the half-abandoned hotel
McAfee never said he was in this hotel. However, a group of computer enthusiasts compiled clues from pictures and comments that he posted online, using methods such as open source intelligence that conveyed Spanish publications.
When the cybersecurity mogul said he was hiding near Belarus, several leads brought him to Spain instead. Some of the images he posted on social media included his photos of beaches and balconies, which match images on Google Maps of the Daurada Park Hotel.
In March, during the coronavirus pandemic, McAfee shared photos of empty supermarkets with prices in Catalan. He was also previously spotted with a bottle of Sumarroca Catalan cava wine, Spanish Bezoya water bottles, and ATO cream, which was also made there.
McAfee finally admitted to being in Catalonia when he “visited Spain for a few days”. However, the group believed that this hotel was their long-term base. “He himself said that he has come to Catalonia a lot since 2018 or 2019 and it seems that he was based in this hotel,” they said.
The antivirus tycoon was arrested at El Prat Airport in Barcelona on October 3 last year while trying to fly to Turkey. The next day, McAfee was admitted to Brian’s 2 prison in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires after appearing before the Spanish Supreme Court. In March he was indicted by the US Department of Justice. After the 75-year-old was found hanged in his prison cell, speculation about a “dead man’s switch” made the rounds.
