Spanish officials told El Pais newspaper that “everything points to suicide”.

However, when the news went viral on the internet, many said they believe McAfee would never take his own life, and speculation of a “dead man’s switch” conspiracy began to circulate. Basically, a dead man’s switch is a switch that is activated when the human operator is either dead or in some way incapacitated.

However, others claim that the “Q” image contained only standard Facebook metadata.

There was also discussion of an Ethereum-based token that was once associated with McAfee. For example, people said that Instagram’s metadata led them to an Ethereum smart contract called “Epstein” showing an ERC20 token called “whackd (WHACKD)”. Since the Epstein Smart Contract and Whackd tokens have seen some onchain movement, people believe that these coins are directly linked to McAfee. There are a number of 4chan posts claiming that the Instagram post “Q” and the wacky ERC20s are linked.

The Whackd Tattoo and alleged 31 terabytes of incriminating data

The theory also discusses McAfee’s earlier statements and his arm tattoo that reads “whackd”. McAfee explained at a time when he knew the government was going to get him.

“I get subtle messages from US officials who end up saying, ‘We’re coming for you McAfee! We’re going to kill you. ‘ I got a tattoo today just in case. If I killed myself, I didn’t. I was crazy Check out my right arm. $ WACKD is only available on McAfeedex.com, ”McAfee explained in November 2019. In the summer, months before he got the tattoo, he also said:

A week after this tweet, McAfee wrote, “The moment I go, the information will be released. Those named would be crazy to kill or rally me. They just pray that I will live forever. If it gets published, take revenge and I’ll be dead. “

In addition to the speculation, a former 8kun administrator linked to Q Anon told Newsweek this week that McAfee may be using a dead man’s switch.

“Regarding John McAfee, he was in jail. He has a dead man’s switch. He died’. His dead man’s switch has not (yet) activated, ”said the former 8kun administrator in Telegram. “We’ll soon know if he is really dead or if he escaped from prison under the guise of ‘suicide’. [i.e. Epstein.]”

Most of the theories and evidence behind the switch dead man theory comes from mere speculation, the controversial Q Anon group, and very little evidence. The reason is that the Instagram post was challenged because McAfee said it didn’t run the account in the past. And as mentioned above, metadata from the Instagram post is standard metadata from Facebook photos.

In addition, the ERC20 tokens could be moved by anyone who owns the tokens, and these coins show no direct connection to John McAfee or “31+ terabytes” of so-called hidden data. At the moment the story is wildly speculative and considered a conspiracy theory that doesn’t hold much water.

McAfee’s widow wants a “thorough” investigation

However, John McAfee’s wife Janice and John’s close associates believe he was not suicidal. Speaking to the press on Friday, Janice McAfee’s attorney Javier Villalba said the official autopsy is taking place and the family also wants an independent second autopsy.
