G7 nations urge Russia to identify and disrupt ransomware hackers who abuse cryptocurrencies
The heads of state and government of the G7 countries met from June 11th to 13th in Cornwall, England. A long list of topics they discussed included cryptocurrency ransomware attacks. The G7 includes the US, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and Canada.
“We reaffirm our interest in stable and predictable relations with Russia and will continue to engage in areas of common interest,” read a communique published on the Sunday following a summit of heads of state and government:
In particular, we urge Russia to… identify, disrupt and hold accountable those within its borders who carry out ransomware attacks, misuse virtual currency to launder ransom money, and other cybercrimes.
In addition to cybercrime, the G7 leaders called on Russia to “investigate and credibly explain the use of chemical weapons on its soil” and “end its systematic crackdown on independent civil society and the media”.
Ransomware attacks recently hit several large US corporations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believes the attackers belonged to Russian cybercriminal groups. The hackers demanded payment in Bitcoin. The bureau suspects that the Revil Group, aka Sodinokibi, was behind the attack on the meat processing company JBS. The hacker group Darkside is said to be behind the ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline.
The Biden administration said earlier this month that “combating ransomware is a priority for government,” adding that it would expand cryptocurrency analysis to combat ransomware attacks.
G7 finance ministers and central bank governors met in London earlier this month. They discussed the regulation of central bank digital currencies and agreed to “work towards common principles and publish conclusions later in the year”.
